Romeo San, London

B3 Designers were commissioned to design the interiors for Romeo San a contemporary Japanese restaurant in Marylebone, London.

The Concept

Romeo San celebrates Japanese culture through a distinctly modern London lens.
The concept is rooted in sharing, discovery, and connection.

Blending the high quality of a traditional sushi-ya with the warmth and accessibility of a shokudo, the restaurant delivers a dining experience that feels both familiar and fresh.

The design creates spaces that encourage interaction, from counter seating that brings guests close to the chefs, to communal tables that invite conversation. The interiors are simple, tactile, and energetic, achieving a balance between urban London and playful Japanese pop culture.

Design Approach

The project’s visual story combines the pop romance of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet with traditional Japanese craft. The name “Romeo San” bridges cultures: Romeo for its British pop-cultural resonance, San as a respectful Japanese honorific.

Our role as the interior designers was to translate that blend into an environment that feels approachable, modern, and unmistakably characterful.

The shopfront design uses bold colour blocks and Japanese planters make the façade stand out among Marylebone’s elegant streets.

The restaurant itself is designed with a central sushi counter framed by warm timber, a gantry, an exposed ceiling, and textured walls creating contrast and energy.

Details

We designed bespoke neon wall lights to evoke the glow of Tokyo’s backstreets while complementing the restaurant’s minimalism.

The material palette uses concrete-look porcelain floors, tinted wood veneers, and distressed finishes. The furniture draws from the simplicity of Japanese design, and is a mix of handcrafted timber stools and mid-height seating balances.
