MOMMI

It’s December and we’re consumed by last minute Christmas shopping, Christmas party prep, all of which is quite exhausting. Luckily for us its dinnertime and we happen to be right outside recently opened MOMMI on Clapham High Street.

We’re greeted by a cool, almost futuristic frontage, with blacken black timber cladding and strips of yellow neon, white signage and bright exterior furniture.

 The interior seating area is dark around the central bar area with a soft glow diffusing from the wall lights making it a comfortable and enjoyable place to eat or have a drink.

And one could definitely just pop in for a cocktail, the restaurant has a great drinks menu with cocktails which came in a range of quirky glasses. The colourful graphics on the wall by the high tables  and the pasted graphics around the restaurant add to the unique and busy character of this place.

We loved the food and definitely recommend going there to dine. From the Japanese haut-cuisine menu we ordered 3-4 smaller dishes including something from a raw menu, something from a grill menu and something from the ‘hot dish’ menu. It was a is definitely a unique and delicious experience. 

Ordering the salmon sashimi which was stunningly fresh, a raw rice bowl and crispy sea bass I had an incredible meal. Every dish came out as pretty as the last, and though they looked very light and delicate the combination of flavours from simple purees and sauces made every dish exciting, so tasty and filling! It’s a great place to go with other people who enjoy sharing food as well - Since there are quite a few small dishes and some large you could pick a whole selection and have a bit of everything!

All of the tables and chairs looked like bespoke pieces that were beautiful and stylishly finished. There was a larger central table behind our bench table that was a lovely light marble with a metal frame that held onto the stool seating around it as well. There was also an area of low seating along a beautiful black marble top that followed the edge of an open kitchen around - so you could sit and watch the chefs as they cooked your food.

 The wall finishes had clearly been thoughtfully designed and added to the whole atmosphere of the place with some graphical, some chevroned tiling and, in our seating area, a collage of old posters and photos.
