Pharmacia, Lisbon

Pharmacia, a Lisbon restaurant housed in the city’s art deco Pharmacy Museum, is not shy with colour. The bright interior uses almost exclusively vintage and antique items in its decor. It is fit out with vintage lamps, bell jars, measuring scales among other bits and pieces that are on loan to the restaurant from the museum. A mix of mismatched chairs surround dining tables with equally mismatched place settings, creating the impression of playful chaos. The space has a retro feel with a good balance of kitch and cool.

Hotel San José, Austin

Just a few blocks South of where the Colorado river cuts through Austin, Texas sits the newly renovated Hotel San José.  The hotel was in a state of disrepair not too long ago, but has since been taken over by new owner, Liz Lambert, who is responsible for its transformation along with San Antonio architecture firm Lake/Flato.

The hotel consists of series of calm spaces arranged around a courtyard, perfect for the warm and sunny Texas weather. Both interior and exterior spaces are painted in muted tones of green and white and are complimented by interesting fabric patterns and indigenous plants in earthy pots.

The design is kept interesting with quirky details like the retro menus and original century furniture.

Vanilla, Berlin by Pandarosa

Vanilla is a sweet coffee shop in East Berlin – made even sweeter with a little typography inspired interior by design duo Pandarosa. The pink and blue colour scheme harks back to childhood days spent drooling over the ice-cream counter, while the seamless treatment of signage, logo and wallpaper is a very grown-up attitude to holistic design. The looping ‘l’s of ‘Vanilla’ repeat to make a pattern for the wall behind the counter. Vintage touches in fixtures and fittings add to the retro vibe.

The design is by Ariel Aguilera and Andrea Benyi, whose work has been commissioned by big brands Volkswagen, Lee Jeans and Adidas and can also be seen in Copenhagen’s  Hotel Fox.

1948 Nike Playground Retail Store

1948 is Nike’s creative playground-retail store in the old brick railway arches of Shoreditch, London. In addition to displaying and selling shoes, 1948 offers an entire art floor for events, installations and assorted fun. The installation created by Finland-born illustrator/artist/designer Kustaa Saksi is all about the historical fun journey of the Nike running shoe. Typical for the currently Amsterdam-based Saksi, the sprawling scene has a pop-art, retro feel that fits Nike’s history as a brand. Saksi’s Volkswagen van and psychedelic colors illustrate the pre-swoosh era in an earnest and deliberately clunky way.
