Tortilla, London

First Tortilla Location, London, Islington

Tortilla’s concept is to deliver fresh, good quality California style Mexican food on the go. The interior was to reflect this honest approach. B3 worked with the Tortilla team to develop the interior for their first location in Islington. In order to reflect their approach we decided to use simple and robust materials such as solid oiled oak and stainless steel.

Brand Success and Growth

The brand’s success has enabled it to be rolled out to three further London locations following its initial Islington site in Southwark, Canary Wharf and Market Place. As we’ve continued to work with Tortilla we’ve been thrilled to see the brand develop and grow. Having worked with them on number of projects now we’ve been able to ensure that a homogeneous brand interior is maintained whilst continuing to develop and grow the interior with the brand.

Tortilla, Southwark

The Southwark site is located within the Blue Fin Building designed by architects Allies and Morrison. B3 took full advantage of the double height of the building by introducing a mezzanine, increasing the capacity for eat-in customers.

Chrome wire frame chairs form a light contrast to the heavy solid wood tables and benches. The distinctive Tortilla red is the only colour used throughout the space, making it immediately recognisable. The solid glass shop front means that exterior branding could be kept minimal as the whole restaurant acts as its own advertisement. Frosted vinyl graphics were applied to the glass screens that shield the kitchen from the dining area. The graphics, designed by Relish graphic design, depict scenes from San Francisco’s famous Mission Street.

Tortilla, Market Place

The Market Place site maintains the Tortilla identity of the easy, freshness of the Californian Burrito and adds further authentic design elements to the experience; the exposed brickwork and market stall style shelves capture the earthy, rustic nature of fresh produce while the exterior views make it a highly visible alternative to neighbouring competition.

As the Market Place site is long and narrow we created a strong feature of signature red Tortilla tiles around the bar counter at the back of the space. By creating this feature, customers are brought into the space and encouraged to move through the space so they get a view of all seating areas. We widened the staircase and repositioned the bathrooms so the downstairs area could be seen from above.
