Creating an Experience with Hotel Design
Hotels of today are about creating a completely unique experience for the customer. The location, brand identity, exterior architecture, technology features, facilities, interior design of rooms and communal spaces as well as the operations and service work together to form that experience from check in through to check out. Hotels are an opportunity for customers to step out of the reality of their everyday lives and experience a different kind of lifestyle that may be more luxurious, fashionable or adventurous. B3 Designers work with clients to understand the unique selling points of their hotel and the target audience in order to build holistic hotel designs and brand identities that communicate to the consumer throughout their hotel experience.
From Bespoke Brief to Bespoke Design
You may be looking to expand or establish a trusted multinational brand that sends a clear design message of a consistent experience through commonality in your hotels’ design message; conversely you may be looking to create and grow an independent hotel group, where your brand is more subtly communicated through features within the hotel design. B3 Designers have a wealth of experience working on a range of hotel designs and communicating design messages to various target markets. We work with clients to create a brief that fits their vision, and we then continue to brainstorm and develop a concept that is unique and appropriate to the hotel. Our conceptual process is broken down into two or more stages, ensuring that an effective dialogue is established with hoteliers and their teams. We are also aware of the plethora of practical issues that come with designing a hotel. We work alongside project managers and quantity surveyors to ensure that the design is in line with programme and budgetary considerations.
From Successful Design to Successful Business
The test of whether a design is successful or not is ultimately judged by the consumer and observed by the choices they make. Is the experience what the customer expected? Did it thrill or disappoint? Did customers spend time and money enjoying the hotel’s additional facilities or did they go elsewhere? Did the customer return to the hotel or recommend it to their colleagues and friends? As hotel designers it’s our job to build, meet and exceed expectations to secure a positive result. This is especially important to independent design hotels where the branding is often not seen in a name or a logo but through subtle design features that communicate a type of experience. A hotel designer will look to send a clear message across various consumer 'touch points' including:
- The website, photography and logo design.
- The relationship between the design of the hotel and its surroundings.
- Signage, lighting, entrance and entrance door.
- The change in lighting from daytime to evening.
- Ensuring there is a clear and cohesive link between the architecture of the building and the interior, whilst providing a design that is relevant and up to date.
- Associations with other brands and how they work.
- The communal spaces within a hotel including the reception, restaurants, bars, gyms, spas and corridors. These spaces may be destinational in their own right and appeal to both hotel guests and those just visiting for a meal, drink or day spa.
- The private spaces, namely the rooms, and how they communicate the hotel brand whilst providing an element of individuality and comfort for the guest through character and features.
- The features of the space and how they add value to the customers’ experience in the hotel.
As hotel designers, the true testament to our success has been our hotelier clients who have worked with us to create and implement successful designs. Design has been a significant contributing factor in enabling them to develop and grow their hotel business.
