Bungalow Eight in Mumbai (not to be confused with London’s Bungalow 8 nightclub) is a beautifully curated luxury store, selling products ranging from high quality clothes to home ware. The store is spread across a three story building, designed by architect Bijoy Jain, and takes its name from the address where Maithili Ahluwalia, the owner, grew up. The spacious building has unusually high ceilings and was left mostly bare, with raw concrete and exposed trusses. The few fixtures that do adorn the space is minimal and high end, like the tube lights by Michael Anstassiades. The selection of objects on sale all originate from either India or France and are arranged in such a way that you may be mistaken for being in someone’s home.

Idea Spice Design Office by Busride Design Studio

The Busride Design Studio is an emerging design practice in Mumbai, having a lot of quirky and inventive projects in their protfolio. Featured here is an office they designed for Idea Spice Design. The company looked to shift gears in profile, so the new office was meant to reflect the new projected identity in essence and spirit to their clients and themselves. The project was done while at Idea Spice, maybe one of the reasons why it does feature bunk beds on top of all the desks, even though they claim that “the design was a result of in-depth understanding of the work style and culture, individual and collective needs, and resulted in a built environment that became the tangible form of the new identity.”

Planet 3 Studios Architecture facilities in Mumbai

Mumbai practice Planet 3 Studios Architecture have completed new facilities at Vidyalankar Institute of Technology in, Mumbai, India, the interior of which incorporates a lotus flower-shaped learning centre. The project involved converting an existing industrial building; the core of the structure was removed and a mezzanine floor added, as well as a new external skin. “The design borrows heavily from the language and forms of nature,” says Kalhan Mattoo of Planet 3 Studios Architecture. The building’s skin is intended to evoke “the sway of tall grass stalks up-close in strong wind” and shelters a patio connected to the canteen. The building includes laboratories, a learning centre and canteen.
