Babel, London

Faucet Inn approached B3 Designers to update their existing Babel bar on Northcote Road in Clapham. Basing the concept on the name ‘Babel’, B3 turned the confusion of languages into confusion of visual styles. The result is an eclectic interior using reclaimed objects and a mixture of styles. The visual language was created by using a mix of styles from various eras – such as 50s style furniture, a reclaimed nineteenth century bar and different varieties of lighting.

The colourful lamps were either custom made incorporating specially designed fabric or were individually sourced from a selection of design shops. These hang in clusters from the ceiling, attracting passers by from the busy high street.

The feature wall is made up of reclaimed letters, sourced from different salvage yards and from ‘Shelf’ on Cheshire St, Shoreditch. Behind the salvaged bar front the back bar walls are covered with hundreds of framed antique finish mirrors which reflect a kaleidoscopic impression of the space.

The soft seating was specifically designed for Babel and takes inspiration from 1950’s classic furniture. The poser tables are made up of decorative cast iron balustrade sections offset by the functional design of the Tolix stools. The outside seating area is enlivened by a selection of colourful Luxembourg chairs.

These features give Babel a twist that marks it out from the surrounding competition.
